Musicians, especially pro drummers, can hear that kind of delay and it's anywhere between annoying to totally maddening.

The DSPs aren't computationally more powerful than, say, a Mac Pro or a massive NVidia GPU, but they can do one thing that the CPU or GPU can't: let you monitor a complex live mix with effects with sub millisecond latency between when the performer plays to when they hear it in the headphones.ĭue to how general-purpose OSes like macOS or Windows are built, doing that same kind of monitoring of your mix is going to be 4x to 20x slower due to the audio getting buffered up at your interface, shipped to the CPU, processed through your mix and plug-ins, then shipped back out to your interface. As a secondary piece it also gets you reliable processing without the CPU spikes that native plug-ins often suffer. The DSP processing gets you one main thing: super low latency for monitoring your mixes with plug-ins. The HDX cards have two parts: massive I/O up to 192 channels and DSP processing. What are your thoughts on DSP vs GPU/CPU processing? Any input is appreciated, thanks!ĮDIT: Initially had posted this to /r/audioengineering but it was removed due to being related to Pro Tools (gotta love when a post about audio engineering gets removed from a sub literally dedicated to audio 🤦‍♂️), and since then I have found this article on pro tools expert that talks about how the age of DSP is pretty much over and that GPUs are the future of audio processing. What do DSP cards do that a combination of CPU and GPU can’t do? Would it not make more sense to invest in higher spec computer components(CPU/GPU/RAM) instead of spending 5 grand on a single HDX card? Seems kinda weird that if you have an interface with more than 32 channels of I/O, that Pro Tools(non HDX)would just literally not allow you to use it. In theory, I could have as many tracks and channels of I/O as my computer/interface could handle. Is it just a money thing to get you to buy their gear? Are they like the Apple of the audio world or is there an actual reason that doing things this way works better? My main DAW, Ableton, is only capped by the performance of your computer. Pro Tools seems to be the only DAW that limits the amount of tracks and I/O based on how much proprietary gear you have. Why can’t a GPU do the work of a DSP? GPUs are not limited to only video, they also can perform other processing heavy tasks like mining, rendering, and other compute work. What makes the card worth that much money? What makes a DSP card different from a GPU(other than the lack of video output) or an ASIC card? From what I can tell, all 3 of these standards use a PCIE card with chips that compute data in slightly different ways. Hey all, I’ve been doing some research into DSP stuff, mostly PT HDX and UAD. Probably a dumb question but I couldn’t really find a solid answer online. r/MixClub /r/ListenToThis /r/Music /r/RadioReddit /r/LearnMusic /r/Reasoners /r/AudioPost /r/GameAudio /r/RateMyAudio /r/StudioPorn /r/SFXLibraries

Provide the version of Pro Tools, the operating system, the error number, hardware involved, and what you have tried. The post title should only be a very short / concise description of the problem. If you are given given an error number, add it to the front of the post titleĭo not make sensationalized post titles like stating you need help (all posters do and it is not truly informative), urgency (it's always urgent), all caps, or excessive punctuation.
